BACKBONE.JS CODE REVIEW + TRAINING

Our client ConnectSolutions, the leading managed-cloud provider of unified communications (UC) solutions for small business, enterprise and government, wanted a one-day private Backbone.js training event with two days of hands on workshops including pair programming. From exploration of how and why the modern DOM is used to how a Backbone.js system should be architected, we instructed on a vast array of topics custom designed for ConnectSolutions core team of 10 engineers.

After taking over a technical team for a small business, we recognized the need to update our technical stack. This was especially difficult on the web front end, the technology changes so often and it is a big scope to try to grock. We decided to try to arrange for some training after taking on a re-write and finding ourselves unhappy with the output. We searched the internet far and wide and read about the people at Quick Left from a training they had done in San Francisco the year before.

Backbone.js

We primarily covered how to use the Backbone.js library to organize their JavaScript, simplify data handling, and speed development. We also provided hands on pairing for implementing Backbone to provide structure to web applications by creating models, collections, and views, and connecting them to their existing API over a RESTful JSON interface.

Frontend Framework Showdown

Quick Left sent two of our developers to their San Francisco office and customized a training program based off the client's desires as well as the code review conducted ahead of time on their current application. In addition to the consulting work, we also co-hosted an event, the Frontend Framework Showdown, where we recruited core-contributors to Angular and Ember, while we represented Backbone in a nerd war on frontend frameworks.

I would say our team went from a D+ frontend development team to a B+ frontend development team in 3 days. It was an impressive transformation. Quick Left prepared well ahead of time, reading our code base and preparing a training targeted just at what we needed to be successful. Our engineers often ask if it is possible to arrange to work with him again. I strongly recommend Quick Left for their technical expertise, social intelligence, and business acumen.

Networking & Training

To cap off the customized training program, we co-hosted the Frontend Framework Showdown event the last day of the engagement, providing marketing support and tapping into our network of popular core contributors to JavaScript frameworks. The event sold out with more than 200 registered and was the first of its kind hosted by ConnectSolutions. We couldn't think of a better way to end an engagement with a great client.
