Meet the Team: QLer Joe

Say hi to our CPO and next up in the Meet the Team series, Joe Stump. Joe grew up in rural Michigan and promptly fled to the West Coast after graduating from college. Since then he’s lived in Seattle, San Francisco, Boulder, and now resides in the 90s in Portland. Joe has been hacking his way around the internet since the early 90s and has worked at, founded, and invested in a number of startups since the first dotcom boom. Today he splits his time between doing DevOps at Sprint.ly and product management for Quick Left.

Jorts or Skinny Jeans?

I used to think skinny jeans were insane, but then I lost 40 pounds and started dating an artist. Now they’re alright. Also, everyone knows they’re not jorts; they’re never-nudes.

The best part of waking up?

When you realize it’s Saturday and delicious brunch awaits.

What is one of your favorite quotes?

I’m a pretty big quote nerd. I tend to collect them over time so I’m going to cheat and offer two of my favorites:

"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness." – Mark Twain

I like this one because it so succinctly sums up many complicated topics. I honestly believe the world would be a better place if we simply traveled more and got to know more people, cultures, and places.

"You can't be what you were; so you better start being what you are." – Fugazi

This quote, to me, gets to the heart of two things: not looking behind you and accepting who you are. All of us end up being a number of “people” throughout the entirety of our lives. Who I am now is very different than who I was as a teenager or even in my 20s. I can’t be those people anymore, so I have to focus on who I am now and where I want to go next.

What is your favorite guilty pleasure song?

A buddy of mine from Norway introduced me to a band called Donkeyboy. Their song Ambitions one of the trashiest Europop songs ever and I simply can’t get enough of it. I also became a fan of shit-smoked salmon on that trip, but that’s another story for another day.

What is your favorite form of exercise?

Per Portland city ordinance and Quick Left articles of incorporation, my favorite form of exercising is biking. I’m particularly fond of Mission Bicycle’s rides.

What is your theme song?

The A-Team theme song has been my adopted theme song since 1983. It’s served me well.

If you could know the answer to any question besides "What is the meaning of life" what would it be?

There are a number of interesting questions related to space that I’d love to know the answer to. For instance, what is beyond the visible universe? Most people know that the light that hits our telescopes took a very long time to reach us. What many people might not realize is that the visible universe is much smaller than the actual universe. Even the Hubble can only see a fraction of what’s actually out there.

What's the hardest thing you've ever done?

Probably a combination of two things: losing 80 pounds since getting out of college and training for a few triathlons.
