Boulder Startup Week 2014 – Year of the Geek

It's almost time for another Boulder Startup Week, and we aren't planning on participating….twiddles thumbs…KidDING! With about 60 events happening during BSW, you might have a tough time picking which ones to attend. We may be biased, but you know Quick Left can throw a fun event. Just sayin'. So join us at our Battle of the Games Hackfests to our 2nd Annual Office Chair Race to Biking With the Big Shots and more!

Monday, May 12 6-10 PM

Battle of the Games Hackfest
Register here

We’ve done a beerfest hackfest, biking hackfest, lock-picking hackfest, but now it is time….time to bust out your best hacked-together code with your maze-solving, token gathering, and weapon making skills. Why? Because we're kicking off Boulder Startup Week with our Battle of the Games hackfest! You can make your own adventure text game, table-top game, a MMOG, a badass MUD game (but be prepared for mockery), or even board game. WE WANT ALL THE THINGS (in three hours or less).

Don't code? Don't worry. We will have all the classic games in the house for you to get your Donkey Kong, Contra, and Battletoads fix. We're featuring original NES, Super Nintendo, Game Boy, and more consoles to battle it out in your own competition. Beer, food and prizes provided by our generous sponsors so stay for the end when teams formed the night-of will present their project after only three hours of hacking. First 20 teams who use SparkFun's MaKey MaKeys with their application will go home with a FREE one.

Haven't been to a hackfest before, check out some pics from our previous MaKey MaKey hackfest.

The New Golf: Biking with Big Shots
Register here

Tuesday, May 13th from 12pm – 2pm on the roads around town. Meet at Spruce Confections, Pearl and 8th (near University Bikes for those renting and on the less busy end of the street so a larger crowd won't be too much of an issue).

These days, networking can take on all kinds of creative forms, and one of the most popular around Boulder is biking. Nicknamed "the new golf" for the high-level connections that can be made between people in spandex, biking is a great opportunity to chat with some of thebig shots around town, as long as you can keep up on the hills! This ride will be around 20 or 30 miles and is designed for people who have some previous experience on a road bike. Company founders, management, and executives will be attending, along with venture capitalists and professional cyclists. Still not convinced why networking on a bike is better than the golf course? Read this article from CNN Money and then go dust off your bicycle.

Here at Quick Left we love biking-we love it so much that we made a video of our last outing at Winter Bike to Work Day 2014. Check it below.

Wednesday, May 14 from 11-2 PM

2nd Annual Geek Field Day
Register here

During the middle of the week, what could be more refreshing than a field day in the park, complete with water balloon tosses, three-legged racing, solving math problems while larpers are jousting to distract you, selfie competitions, and more! Come enjoy beers and burritos and compete with your fellow startup geeks to see who has the most deadly accurate with a nerf gun, or just toss around a frisbee. Or just sip some drinks and get some Vitamin D. That's cool, too. Big thanks to SendGrid and Gnip for the burritos, beer and nerf guns!

The winning team also gets to go home with one of these sweet, limited edition BSW t-shirts, so you should definitely show up.

Thursday, May 15 from 4-6 PM

Office Chair Race and Scavenger Hunt, Thursday at 4 PM
Register here

Assemble your best team of up to four people who are skilled at not only deciphering cryptic clues but also helping to push, pull or carry your team leader in an office chair down the street and around various downtown locations. Dress up and decorate your chair for our SWAG competition too. You will be collecting evidence of your visit to every place the clues lead you to, taking pictures and sharing them on Twitter to prove that your team completed all the tasks needed to finish this ridiculous race in first place! Or second, or third place, or even last – the main point is just to get out there on your chair and have fun. Check out our video of last year's Office Chair Race. While we almost got arrested, the cop came around and judged our SWAG competition:)

Thursday, May 15 from 6-9 PM

Ignite Boulder
Sold out!

Quick Left has sponsored Ignite since the beginning and even have a few QLers who've spoken! So after your chair race, wheel over to the theater and be prepared to be inspired. Not familiar with Ignite? Ignite is a night of presentations on a variety of topics, with a twist. Each presentation has 20 slides that automatically advance every 15 seconds. It is a worldwide movement, and Boulder is hosting our twenty-third on Thursday, May 15th, at 7pm (6pm doors) at the Boulder Theater. Doors open an hour before the show, event runs till 9pm. It is a 21+ event – you can buy beer at the show. We will have onstage interpreters for the hearing impaired. It's a volunteer run geek event that puts on some pretty inspirational topics for the evening.

Entire Month of May: Startup Strava Challenge

For the entire month of May, we're tracking our biking, running and even dancing miles for charity. Like exercising and supporting a good cuase? Accept our challenge. Each company chooses a non-profit to support and chips in $100. The company with the most mileage as an average of employees by May 31, wins the cash for their charity!

Geek Sabbath – Day of Rest

Pretty sure we'll be exhausted. We deserve it a day of rest and will use this time to scope out some other events around town!
